Wilderness | Award-winning Luxury African Safari Camps

Wilderness | Award-winning Luxury African Safari Camps. The authentic African experiences offered by Wilderness Safaris are very memorable, exciting, and informative, but they also place a strong emphasis on environmental preservation. Wilderness Safaris, which currently runs over 60 lodges in Botswana, Namibia, Malawi, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, and Seychelles, has made a name for itself as the premier safari provider in southern Africa and has won numerous international accolades for tour operators.

Each camp has its own ambiance and personality since the lodges’ designs reflect the distinctiveness of each region and its wildlife rather than adhering to a single design aesthetic. Depending on the location, the cuisine varies, but Wilderness camps typically favor seasonal, wholesome meals at elegantly set dining tables rather than the “nouvelle cuisine” preferred by other lodges. Mealtimes also have a strong social component as guests and guides chat about the day’s activities.

The “4Cs”—Conservation, Community, Culture, and Commerce—are the cornerstones of Wilderness Safaris’ corporate concept. It comes as no surprise that Conservation is listed first: Above all, Wilderness Safaris is a business committed to responsible, conservation-based tourism in the regions where it works. This company is at the forefront of environmentally conscious travel to Africa since it works to offer outstanding safari experiences without ever compromising the local ecology.

Wilderness | Discover Earth’s ultimate, untamed places

Wilderness (formerly known as Wilderness Safaris) is widely celebrated as Africa’s foremost luxury and sustainable ecotourism operator. Founded in 1983 in Botswana by two local safari guides, the company operates more than 40 luxury camps and lodges across eight African nations, protecting millions of hectares of pristine wilderness.

In addition to offering expertly guided game drives in prime game-viewing areas, Wilderness Safaris takes great pride in the “interpretive experience” approach to an African safari. Personal guides interpret every aspect of nature that is seen, from termite mounds and dung beetles to the social behavior of lion prides.

Core Safari Destinations & Camps

Wilderness intentionally spots its high-end lodges in low-volume, wildlife-dense regions. Key properties spotlighted by luxury planners like The Bespoke African Safari Co., Jacada Travel, Kabira Safaris Africa and Scott Dunn include:

Botswana: The brand’s birthplace. Iconic properties in the Okavango Delta include the flagship Mombo Camp and Little Mombo (renowned for dense predator populations on Chief’s Island), DumaTau in the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve, and the ultra-luxurious Vumbura Plains.

Rwanda: Features the globally acclaimed Bisate Lodge adjacent to Volcanoes National Park—famous for bucket-list mountain gorilla trekking—and Magashi Camp in Akagera National Park.

Namibia: Tailored for dramatic desert safaris, featuring Desert Rhino Camp (partnered with Save the Rhino Trust to track black rhinos in Damaraland) and Little Kulala near the massive Sossusvlei dunes.

Regional Expansion: Wilderness also operates premium camps in Zimbabwe (like Ruckomechi on the Zambezi River), Zambia (Toka Leya near Victoria Falls), Kenya (Segera), South Africa, and Tanzania.

The Safari Experience & Impact

The operator focuses strictly on a high-value, low-impact tourism model built around the 4Cs: Commerce, Conservation, Community, and Culture.

Diverse Activities: Beyond classic 4×4 open-vehicle game drives, guests can experience water-safaris in traditional mokoro (dugout) canoes, guided walking safaris, river boating, and aerial helicopter flights over remote terrain.

Conservation Footprint: Wilderness manages over 2.2 million hectares of private concessions and protected land. They actively support the protection of 33 species on the IUCN Red List and fund the non-profit Children in the Wilderness to empower rural youth through environmental education.

Premium Logistics & Pricing: To access these remote outposts, guests typically fly via the brand’s private bush airline, Wilderness Air. As an ultra-exclusive tier operator, all-inclusive rates generally range from $950 to $4,000+ USD per person, per night, heavily depending on the season and specific camp choice.

As we prepared for our landing we were met with an amazing view of the Zimbabwean/Zambian escarpment, dotted with barren trees, an elephant or two in the distance and a glimpse of hippo pods playing in the mighty Zambezi. The warm handshake and broad smile of Abiot whom we’d spend the next ten days took care of our huge safari wishlist and so much more. Before reaching camp we already had an amazing sighting of a lioness, her sister and cubs. What a Welcome to Ruchomechi!! I travelled with my Couzie AC, and upon arrival we were greeted warmly by Michelle, Eddy aka Malume and the team. It was AC’s birthday and Michelle organised a lovely Suprise and the team made us feel right at home. What a start to an incredible journey, our stay at Ruckomechi. Everyday was unique in so many ways, Since there were travel restrictions due to COVID, the camp was not that busy and we were upgraded to the family room closest to the main dining area. Michelle and her team with Malume spoilt us beyond, they would check on us and made sure we were having the best time of our lives, nothing was too much and all our dietary requirements were fulfilled. It was our first visit to Ruchomechi but we have been to Mana Pools a few times before, as avid wildlife photographers we had high expectations of seeing cats other species. Abiot our guide made sure that we find what we were anticipating and more, we even caught some excellent tiger fish. #10 Safari and activity Highlights: #1 spending almost the whole day with a relaxed leopard #2 emptying 2 memory cards on the resident southern Carmine Bee eaters roosting along the river #3 listening to the reverberating sounds of the resident pride of lions taking down an Impala just behind our camp #4 Being woken up by a stampede of buffalo’s whilst sleeping at the tree house #5 landing a monster 7lb Tiger on a fly rod #6 catching bream for dinner surrounded by wildest africa #7 sipping down our favourite drinks as we cruised down the river @ sunset #8 close elephant encounters at the camp and seeing the famous Boswell a few yards from camp #9 Having the whole team that was sincere and going all out to ensure you were having the best Safari experience #10 waking up to the early morning call knowing that another day in Africa is calling As mentioned in previous reviews the rooms were impeccably clean and “Last” made sure we had clean towels, and a warm bed to return to. Dear Ruchomechi Team and Wilderness Safari’s we cannot express our gratitude and sincere appreciation enough for making our trip a journey, memories that we will cherish lifelong. Thank You so much. AC and Mo, Long Live Ruchomechi “ As the Zambezi’s gentle breeze played to the music of the Southern Carmine Bee Eaters, we were enveloped in a display of dashing colours and acrobatic manoeuvres that left us struck in the wonderful creation of Almighty”

Rockomechi is perfectly situated on the banks of the Zambezi River. Our tent (10) was at the end of the camp and had an incredible unobstructed view of the river. And what we saw was amazing. Elephants, Impalas, Hippos, Lions, etc. all wondering within yards of our tent. And of course, those pesky baboons causing mischief throughout our stay. The staff, led by Michelle and Bally, were outstanding. Of the four camps we went to on our trip, this was the best run property by far. The general area was such a gorgeous location for us to enjoy our meals each day. It was also always interesting when an elephant family wonder right by the area to try and join you for your meal. Tongo, our driver and guide, was absolutely fantastic. He did everything in his power to make sure my wife and I saw everything we could during our stay. One example is, we were on the river doing a boat cruise looking at hippo’s, elephants, etc. when Tongo got a call saying that Cheetahs were spotted by another jeep. He politely asked all of us if we wanted to take the chance and we all said, “Let’s go!”. 15 minutes later we were staring at two beautiful cheetahs. Tongo was great!!!!!! This camp is perfectly located and has wonderful leadership and guides (Tongo) to make this a must-see place for you to visit. Do yourself a favor and put this camp on your list if you want to have a truly magical experience in Zimbabwe.
