The Mozambique Beaches: A Guide-Luxury Mozambique Beach Holidays. Venture to the coast or the archipelagos; Mozambique’s beaches epitomise beauty and are ideal for a seaside retreat.
The Quirimbas, Bazaruto, and Southern Mozambique, characterised by pristine beaches, unspoiled coral reefs, and their secluded allure, are preferred locations for numerous travellers in Mozambique.
Mozambique is home to some of the finest beaches, notably the Quirimbas Archipelago, which is considered by many to be the premier beach resort in Africa. The lodges in this area are exceptional. Vamizi Island Lodge, an extraordinary Robinson Crusoe-style beach retreat, boasts a private 7 km stretch of beach. The remarkable attributes of Azura at Quilalea merit consideration for providing an exceptional private island experience. This isolated and mountainous island is encircled by a coral reef, and the area’s beauty will perpetually astonish you.
Featuring immaculate white sands and mild azure waters, Mozambique’s beach resort locations rank among the greatest globally. Certainly, if you seek to alleviate the stress of urban life, this is an excellent choice. These are among our preferred selections.
Where To Go On A Beach Holiday In Mozambique
Mozambique is a concealed treasure of Africa. It features white-sand beaches, coral reefs, blue waterways, and a uniquely bright African ambiance. The amalgamation of vibrant colonial architecture, remarkable wildlife and marine life, and a rich cultural diversity, and the plentiful availability of delectable and spicy peri-peri chicken, renders it an essential addition to any vacation itinerary.
1. Bazaruto Archipelago
The Bazaruto Archipelago is the most accessible beach spot in Mozambique for integrating with safaris in southern Africa.
The Bazaruto National Park comprises five islands located in southern Mozambique’s Bazaruto Archipelago. Bazaruto and Benguerra are the islands renowned for their luxury hotels.
The Bazaruto Archipelago is marked by vast, towering dunes and continually moving sandbanks. It’s a tropical fantasy – one of my favourites – of luxury lodges built on gorgeous palm-rimmed islets.
The Bazaruto Archipelago comprises five islands featuring unspoiled beaches, remarkable marine biodiversity, and distinctive ecosystems. Bazaruto is quite detached from the mainland of Mozambique. Consequently, nature has flourished abundantly. Fish eagles, pink flamingoes, leatherback and green turtles, dolphins, rays, 2,000 types of tropical fish, and the rare dugong can be observed. Bazaruto, the archipelago’s flagship species, harbours the biggest refuge population of dugongs in the Western Indian Ocean.
The islands of Bazaruto feature an exceptional variety of habitats, including coral reefs, seagrass meadows, sand dunes, miombo woods, and mangrove forests. The beaches include pristine white sand and blue waters, catering to both relaxation seekers and adventure enthusiasts.
Prefect For:
- Individuals seeking an escape from their daily routines to attain genuine relaxation.
- Eco-tourists and nature enthusiasts seeking to explore distinctive and exquisite marine and terrestrial ecosystems
- Adventure and watersport aficionados seeking to snorkel and dive at premier locations, kayak, and parasail in pristine waters inhabited by remarkable marine fauna.
2. The Quirimbas Archipelago
The Quirimbas Archipelago, characterised by fine sand, clear skies, unspoiled reefs, and delectable seafood, offers an indelible island retreat. Located off the far coast of northern Mozambique, these private islands are readily accessible via light aircraft or helicopter flights and are rapidly gaining popularity as a destination for a combined beach and safari vacation, alongside the esteemed big game reserves of East and Southern Africa.
Explore our curated selection of Quirimbas excursions for ideas and inspiration: Experience an island-hopping vacation or commence your beach retreat with several days in Pemba on Mozambique’s mainland; further attractions encompass the dilapidated ruins of Ibo, the diminutive island haven of Medjumbe, and the pristine waters of Matemo, ideal for diving, fishing, sailing, and water skiing.

3. Maputo & Southern Mozambique
This southern region offers numerous attractions as a vacation destination, ranging from the vibrant capital city to picturesque beaches and charming towns.
Maputo serves as the capital of Mozambique. It is one of Africa’s most captivating cities, characterised by its vibrant Mediterranean-style architecture situated along broad avenues adorned with lavender jacarandas and vivid orange flame trees. With a lively nightlife, aromatic and piquant Portuguese-inspired cuisine, and a rich cultural and historical heritage, a prolonged stay is warranted. The city exhibits stark contrasts, with colonial-style edifices beside precarious stalls vending fruits, nuts, and fresh seafood; Gustav Eiffel’s Iron House is in proximity to the tranquil, verdant Jardim Tunduru botanical gardens. It is, to the astonishment of many, the location of the longest suspension bridge in Africa (3 km / 1.8 miles).
Perfect For:
- Gastronomes seeking to savour fresh seafood, fusion, and traditional Mozambican cuisine.
- History enthusiasts seeking to examine and observe the manifestations of Portuguese influence in the city.
- Enthusiasts of suspension bridges.
4. Gorongosa National Park
Like many landscapes and wildlife species, Gorongosa once suffered, nearly detrimentally, due to excessive poaching and hunting. However, because effective protection programs and plans have been undertaken, the park is slowly being restored to its former beauty. Referred to as the ‘Eden of Africa’, Gorongosa is one of the earth’s most spectacular and diversified national parks. You will observe impalas, waterbucks, hippopotamuses, crocodiles, elephants, and lions. Birdwatchers will be pleased to learn that it hosts over 300 species.
Beyond its wildlife, the diversity of ecosystems renders Gorongosa exceptionally unique. It is a fascinating and engaging amalgamation of emerald-green floodplains, fever tree woods, palm palms, and cascading vines. One can investigate the Great Rift, Mount Gorongosa, savannahs, lakes, and rivers.
Perfect For:
- animals enthusiasts and animal aficionados want to engage with a locale dedicated to the restoration and preservation of animals.
- Enthusiasts of nature want to discover a variety of distinctive and exquisite landscapes.
- Birdwatchers seeking novel and uncommon observations.
- Sustainable travellers seeking a place committed to the restoration of animals, landscapes, and local communities.
5. Tofo
Despite its appearance as a modest coastal village, Tofo is an essential destination among all the sites to explore in Mozambique. Both day and night offer a captivating experience of genuine, easygoing, and exhilarating Africa.
Aquatic enthusiasts can select from a variety of watersports and activities. Tofo is among the rare locations on Earth where one can observe gentle whale sharks and elegant manta rays throughout the year. Both scuba diving and ‘ocean safari’ snorkelling excursions provide the opportunity to observe these remarkable creatures in their native environment. Tofo is a concealed treasure for surfers of all skill levels, featuring uncrowded breaks, mild waves, a reef break, and heavier swells. A dhow cruise to Pig Island offers an opportunity for a more immersive and authentic experience of the turquoise African waters. Additionally, kayaking, paddleboarding, and wave skiing are available.
The celebration persists as one exits the sea and reaches the beach. Throughout the day and night, one can experience dance music, live performances, and the opportunity to revel on the dancefloor.
The cuisine merits notice. One may savour the regional aromas of coconut, cassava, and locally procured fish.
Prefect For:
- Surfers, divers, and snorkelers seeking distinctive, exceptional, and uncrowded experiences.
- Individuals that revel in social gatherings and music, seeking to immerse themselves in African nightlife.
- Gastronomes seeking immersive culinary experiences and genuine African/Mozambican cuisine.
6. Vilanculos
Situated on the Mozambique coastline, Vilanculos serves as the access point to the Bazaruto Archipelago and is a notable destination in its own right. Several premier resorts in Mozambique are located in this picturesque coastal town, situated directly on the beach with stunning ocean vistas. The town features a selection of excellent local restaurants, and the marine biodiversity of the adjacent Bazaruto Marine Park is exceptional. Mozambique is recognised as one of Africa’s premier diving locations, with Vilanculos renowned for its snorkelling and diving excursions to the adjacent islands. While on land, one can partake in equestrian excursions along the shoreline.
