Get away from it all on this horseback riding vacation! Our action-packed vacation package is ideal for individuals seeking a little something out of the ordinary. On the banks of Lake Victoria, in the town of Entebbe, begins the adventure. Along the way to Jinja, you will be able to witness the same spot that the early explorers aimed to discover—the headwaters of the world’s longest river! Riding through traditional African towns, fertile farmlands, and breathtaking rain forests will transport you far from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. From a rustic cabin in the woods to a luxurious island hideaway in the midst of the Nile, you’ll be staying in some truly unusual lodges during the week! On top of the amazing horseback riding, there’s a designated day for white water rapids, sunset cruises, or just taking in the breathtaking scenery.

Incredible views and constantly shifting landscapes make horseback riding in Uganda an unforgettable experience. As you meander through the sugarcane fields, take in the scenery as you ride leisurely past the rapid river below. Navigate the lush Mariba forest while feeling like a true jungle explorer as you wind your way through sprawling tea and coffee estates. Long canters and dazzling gallops are both made possible on the dirt paths that wind through the farmlands. Hike uphill to vantage points that look out over Lake Victoria and the verdant countryside as the river winds its way through it. The horses are highly intelligent, enthusiastic, and proud of their sanctuary. If you want to make the most of this thrilling adventure, you should be comfortable at the saddle and have plenty of practice trotting and cantering – Good things will come to you!

Just over an hour’s flight from Entebbe is the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, home to about half of the world’s gorillas. During your stay on Lake Mutanda, you will be able to take in the breathtaking scenery of the distant volcanoes and mountains. The lake provides an ideal starting point for gorilla trekking experiences and is home to a wide range of fascinating sports. With the help of knowledgeable guides and trackers, hikers who are reasonably fit can enjoy the breathtaking bamboo-covered hills and tropical rainforests of the park. Even though there are some challenging sections of the trail, the pleasure of seeing a silverback and his brood for the first time is well worth the effort. Being in the company of such magnificent creatures is an unforgettable and remarkable experience.

Itinerary Summary

The actual schedule could differ depending on factors like the weather, so please keep that in mind. We will always prioritize making adjustments that are in your best interest. Itineraries are subject to change, thus actual riding time may vary on any given day.

Prior to going gorilla trekking, we suggest going on a horse safari. There are a limited number of gorilla trekking permits and the availability of accommodations could impact this.

Mutanda Lake Resort does not have a set schedule. Because going on a gorilla walk takes an entire day, we may arrange for your permits on your behalf. Guests can opt for a two-day journey or explore other local climbs. Just tell us what you’re into, and we’ll give you some advice. On days when trekking isn’t in the cards, you can arrange for one of the numerous other activities offered by the lodge. In the event that Mutanda Lake Resort is unavailable, we might explore other possibilities in the Bwindi area.

Detailed Horseback Riding And Gorilla Trekking Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival And Introductory Ride

Flights departing from Entebbe International Airport can be booked internationally. You can skip the airport and get right to your adventure because many flights land early in the morning. We can make accommodation arrangements if you would like to arrive a day early and spend the night in Entebbe. You will be picked up at approximately 9am on the first day of your tour and driven to Jinja. The drive, which can take up to three hours due to traffic, passes through verdant farmlands and vibrant marketplaces.

When you go to Holland Park, which is close to Jinja, you may enjoy a refreshing drink while taking in breathtaking views of the Nile River. After you have made yourself at home, stroll down to the river’s edge to hop on the Nile boat tour. During lunch, the crew will give you the rundown on all the amazing things happening next week.

Once you’ve met the horses and your guides, it’s time to jump on your horse for a 1.5-hour ride. As the sun sets, you can ride your bike through the picturesque village and along the Nile Riverbanks in the golden light of afternoon. Spend the night at Holland Park and have dinner while gazing out over the Nile.

Day 2: Ride Through The Sugar And Tea Plantations

Horse riding safari around the source of the Nile, in Jinja, Uganda

Get ready for a four-hour ride through traditional communities and sugar plantations after waking up to a beautiful African morning and a hearty breakfast. This path winds its way around the verdant and productive countryside. As you pedal up the hills to your picnic area for lunch, you’ll be treated to breathtaking views of the landscape below. Enjoy the liberty and expansive scenery as your horse takes you on long canters and, if you’re feeling adventurous, some heart-pounding gallops. Host your overnight bash at Holland Park.

Day 3: The Shores of Lake Victoria

Set out on an exciting excursion after a hearty breakfast. Before you get on your horse, you can take a tour of a nearby school if you’d like. The horses will be brought to your starting spot. Please feel free to donate any books suitable for elementary school students that you may have on hand. The next day, embark on a scenic five- or six-hour ride around Lake Victoria, along winding roads past picturesque plantations and woodlands. After a long ride filled with spectacular canters (and daring gallops if you’re feeling adventurous!), a dip in Lake Victoria will help you cool down. Then, it’s time to climb to the lookout point, where a picnic is waiting for you. Nestled in the hills overlooking Jinja town and the lake is today’s lunch destination. On this journey, you may take in breathtaking panoramas of the lake, sugar cane fields, and historic towns. Your overnight stay will be at Rain Forest Lodge, which will be transferred to you after your ride.

Day 4: Rainforest Ride

Riding for three and a half hours through the charming Mabira forest after breakfast, you can look for indigenous monkey species unique to this forest, as well as uncommon forest primates like Grey-cheeked Mangabeys. Due to the potentially muddy conditions in the forest, your guides may need to forge a new route for the horses, slicing through the bush; this in and of itself can be an experience. Even some streams need to be crossed or jumped, but that just adds to the adventure! Just around the corner is a great place to have lunch while taking in the sights of the forest’s avian inhabitants. After your morning activities, head back to Rain Forest Lodge for a relaxing afternoon at the pool, a massage, or a nap. Have a restful night at the River Forest Lodge.

Day 5: Rainforest to River

Approximately five hours of riding through forested areas, tea plantations, and viewing sites awaits you today. Countless beautiful strolls and lightning-fast canters! Get to the Haven, where you’ll be spending the night, in plenty of time for a late lunch or to partake in yet another picnic among the tea plantations. Indulge in a lazy afternoon by the pool or go for a swim in the river while taking in the breathtaking white water rapids. The bar is a good vantage point for seeing otters, fish eagles, and monitor lizards. As the sun sets, the red-tail monkeys perform a spectacular aerial show, soaring from one tree to another. Host your overnight stay at The Haven.

Day 6: Optional White Water Rafting or Other Activity

Today is your day to do whatever you want around here. White water rafting on some of the world’s most breathtaking rivers, complete with mild water and world-class rapids, is sure to be an exhilarating and memorable adventure. Quad riding, bungee jumping, mountain biking, kayaking, and birding trips up the river are some alternatives to rafting that you might like. We can arrange for you to participate in these activities, but they are not part of the trip. If you have any specific interests, please let us know. You can also speak to the staff while you’re there. At the Haven, you have the option of simply relaxing on your own verandah, which comes with a hammock. Host your overnight stay at The Haven.

Day 7: Horseback Swim And Ride to Wildwater Lodge

Lemala Wildwaters Lodge, Uganda

On your final morning of the vacation, get up early and have a delicious breakfast before going for a horseback swim in a picturesque bay with a sandy bottom and no hippos or crocodiles. Following the Nile downstream gives us excellent views of the rapids. Before you speed off to Kalagala Falls, your last ride will take you to a vantage point where you can see the Nile from above. As soon as you bid farewell to your trusty steed, you will be taken by a small boat to the stunning Wild Waters Lodge, an island in the middle of the Nile. After taking in the sights with a picnic lunch and some cocktails, retire to your plush hotel room for the night. Soak away the afternoon in the breathtaking pool that is bordered by enormous white water rapids. Indulge in supper while gazing out at the breathtaking scenery and thinking back on the exciting events of the last week. Let Wild Waters Lodge be your home for the night.

Day 8: Onwards Travel to Entebbe

Before making the journey back to Entebbe, you can enjoy breakfast and some free time at the lodge, depending on your plans. Even if you have to leave your room at 10:00, you are free to relax by the pool or read a book in the lobby. A comfortable guesthouse in Entebbe will be your home for the night once you’ve been picked up for the journey back. On a tighter budget? Try The Boma or Guineafowl Lodge.

Day 9: Flight to Kisoro

You’ll have to get up bright and early because your flight from Entebbe departs from Kisoro Airport. You may be able to see the country’s volcanoes and lakes from above as you soar above the landscape. You will be picked up at your arrival and transported through the countryside and settlement, where you will first see Lake Mutanda through the banana trees. You will be welcomed with a drink and given a briefing upon arrival at the lake. Before a late morning or early afternoon meal, relax in your room with a view of the lake. Anyone seeking to get some shut-eye can do it in the comfort of their own room, in one of the garden hammocks, or while lounging on a deck that overlooks the lake. The more energetic can enjoy a paddleboard ride, a swim in the lake, or a guided tour of the islands. Staying the night at the Lake Mutanda Resort after dinner.

Day 10: Gorilla Trekking

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park | The Ultimate Guide to Gorilla Trekking

Still up bright and early, but it was well worth it! Gathered by your driver, you will be taken on a picturesque trip to the park headquarters, which is situated on the outskirts of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest. Discuss your fitness level and what you hope to accomplish on the hike with your driver. He will speak with the head ranger to determine which family would be the greatest fit for you and handle the registration process on your behalf. Park rangers will give you the lowdown on how to behave around gorillas. It may sound unusual, but there is a specific way to act when you come face to face with these incredible creatures. After all, except from the mountain air, there will be nothing separating you and these tremendously powerful beasts! Your briefing will be followed by a meeting with the rangers and porters, after which you will be led into the forest. The length of the journey can range from thirty minutes to several hours, all dependent on the exact location of the family that sets out that morning. You will have the opportunity to spend approximately an hour with eight different gorilla families who have established themselves in that area of Bwindi. Among the most incredible wildlife encounters that can be imagined! With a tremendous feeling of accomplishment, you will return to the resort in the afternoon.

Day 11: Free Day Or Second Trek

We may buy a second permit for you if you let us know in advance that you would want to do a second day of gorilla trekking, as many tourists choose to do so. Some of the best walks in the region are in the Sabinyo gorge or up one of the distant, forbidding peaks. To further your quest for Golden Monkies, you can also arrange a visit to the neighboring Mgahinga Gorilla National Park. If you’re not in the mood to get up early every day, this is your lucky day to sleep in after a week of doing so. Spend some time paddling about the lake, taking in the scenery in the gardens, or exploring the nearby community. Sleep at Mutanda Lake Resort for the night.

Day 12: Departure

As the sun rises, have one more breakfast by the lakeside before making the return journey to Kisoro airport. Get on the plane for a beautiful journey over the countryside, and you should be back in Entebbe by 11 o’clock in the morning. You might be possible to fly the same day if you’re flying with a certain airline; otherwise, you could need to spend an extra night in Entebbe. We also have the option to reserve a day room for you in case your aircraft takes off at night.
