How Much Does A Malawi Safari Cost? 2027-2035
A Malawi safari generally costs between $300 and $800+ per person, per night, depending on luxury levels, with average mid-range packages ranging from $3,800 to $5,500 for an 8–11 day trip. Budget options start around $200 per day, while luxury, all-inclusive lodges can exceed $1,000 per night during high season (May–October).
Having been to Malawi on multiple occasions, I can attest to the fact that this diminutive nation packs a powerful punch in terms of personality, landscape, and charm. When compared to the prices of premium safaris, this peaceful “bush and beach destination” provides excellent value. A Malawi safari can cost anything from $375 to $800 per person, per night, depending on whether it’s a beach-only or bush-and-beach experience. Or if we are including the premium safari camps in Zambia with our Malawian accommodations, which can drive up the cost.
Why Malawi (& why it’s not necessarily “cheap”)
For those who want to be quiet rather than make a fuss, Malawi is the perfect destination. Imagine the gin-clear waters of Lake Malawi, the intimate parks of Liwonde and Majete, and the truly kind friendliness for which Malawi is known. Room rates are in US dollars and reflect a low-density, quality-over-quantity philosophy. As a result, its pricing is more in line with that of Zambia and Zimbabwe than, instance, Mauritius beach resorts.
Because Malawi has a low per capita income, many people think that beach vacations and safaris must be cheap. Hotels here are priced in South African rand, so you may expect to spend more than the same level of service in Namibia or South Africa.
More affordable options are available in South Africa and Namibia. From reasonably priced to extremely pricey. In contrast, there are plenty of affordable and backpacker options in Malawi (that we don’t sell). And even fewer high-quality resorts, which can be just breathtaking.
Be advised that when you prioritise uniqueness and seclusion over ostentation, Malawi comes out on top when compared to its more costly rivals, such as Botswana and Zambia.
What a Malawi safari costs (per person per night)
The mini-rant comes to a close with that. Now we can get to the meat of the matter! Nightly ranges for the three most prevalent holiday types are displayed below:
- Safari & “Beach” ie. ending on Lake Malawi
- Safari & Beach but mixing a Zambia safari with Lake Malawi
- Beach-only trips to Lake Malawi. These assume private road transfers (or flights)
Rule of thumb: Beach-only tends to be B&B at mid-range and fully-inclusive at the higher end. Bush-and-Beach combinations push the nightly rate upward.
Typical person per night Malawi safari costs
| Per Person Per Night | Moderate | Premier | Premier/Superior Mixing with Zambia | |
| Shoulder Season | Safari & Beach | $525 -$575 | $600 -$650 | $625 -$1,100 |
| Beach only | $350 -$450 | $525 -$625 | n/a | |
| High Season | Safari & Beach | $570 -$675 | $700 -$800 | $800 -$1,350 |
| Beach only | $400 -$525 | $650 -$900 | n/a |
For Example: 7 nights for a bush & beach safari in shoulder season will land around US$4,200–4,600 pp (ex-Lilongwe).
Notes: Many Lake Malawi hotels and lodges close from January to late March as it is simply too rainy and humid to be pleasant.
When to travel for the best value
The difference is not great, even if peak season is higher. Anytime between April and September/October, or perhaps into November, is when we’d suggest it.
- Shoulder Season (Apr or May to June): softer pricing, fresh scenery, and fewer people.
- High Season (July to Sept/Oct): peak wildlife and clearest lake conditions;
- October – prior to the start of the summer rains – can be very hot
- Early Green Season (November): you can expect some rain but keen prices
Note that many lake lodges close fromJan to late March due to rain and humidity.
Smart ways to optimise spend (without losing the premium feel)
- Unfortunately, there isn’t much we can do to bring this nightly range down, but these steps will get you close:
- If you’re short on funds but still want “sub-tropical beach vibes,” a detour to northern KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa might be just what the doctor ordered.
- Unlock long-stay deals and minimise transfer fees by staying longer in fewer places.
- Choose your dates wisely: if you want to save money without sacrificing excellent game viewing, consider June or October as shoulder seasons.
For South African travellers: SADC rates, flight prices & reality checks
Flights from Johannesburg to both Lilongwe and Blantyre fluctuate with demand and timing, typically R9,000–R12,000 pp (~US$560–$750). Book early if your dates are fixed.
Although some SADC lodges do offer resident rates, these are rarely more than a 10%-20% discount (and that doesn’t even account for peak season). Stacking them with long-stay deals is not common. Thus, after everything is said and done, the overall result might be a savings of around 5%.
Frequently Asked Questions on Malawi Safari Prices
Is Malawi cheaper than Mauritius or Thailand for a week at the beach?
No way! Staying at a beach lodge in Malawi for seven nights will set you back more than a week in Mauritius or Thailand. Personality, closeness, and the ability to include a safari into the plan with little effort are the unique selling points. (I am aware; there’s no need to attack the messenger!)
Why are Malawi safari prices USD-based?
As a result, safari prices are more consistently maintained, which is the standard in Southern and East Africa (apart from South Africa and Namibia). The tourism business in Malawi is geared towards the international market and is constructed with a low density in mind, with relatively higher prices.
Can I mix Malawi with Zambia?
Yeah, I think that’s a fantastic plan. Because of the abundance of wildlife in Zambia’s game reserves, visitors may expect to see more of it when they visit. Despite the fact that game reserves in Malawi are rapidly developing. Please be aware that, as shown in the chart above, you will be placed in a higher pricing group when you connect with Zambian premium camps.
