A Detailed 11-Day South Africa Family Safari
Days 1-4: Arrive and Relax in Carefree Cape Town | 4 Nights
Gather your rental vehicle upon your arrival at Cape Town International Airport. You can reach the Winchester Boutique Hotel in Cape Town’s popular Seapoint area in a short drive, following the promenade.
The hotel is conveniently located near the city center and other popular attractions, and it offers a view of the Atlantic Ocean. Just a short drive away are the famous city beaches of Camps Bay and Clifton, as well as the ever-popular V&A Waterfront. The hotel is conveniently located on the sea-facing promenade, making it an ideal site for tranquil evening strolls or a picturesque early morning run.
You can personalise your stay with the help of your Africa Safari Expert. For example, you can go tandem paragliding from Lion’s Head over the Twelve Apostles mountain range and Camps Bay sands, with a soft-grass landing on Sea Point Promenade. Another option is a less strenuous but no less exciting trip to Cape Point, the southernmost point of Africa, where the Atlantic and Indian Oceans have long met.
Days 5-7: Drink in the Beauty of the Cape Winelands | 3 Nights
Get ready to relax in your suite at the luxurious Franschhoek Country House & Villas in the picturesque Cape Winelands town of Franschhoek after a hearty breakfast.
Franschhoek, one of the oldest towns in South Africa, was founded more than 300 years ago by French Huguenots. Today, the town is known for its flair and beauty and is also known as the country’s culinary center. The breathtaking 45-minute trip from Cape Town takes you past beautiful vineyards and breathtaking views. With its art galleries and cafes lining its streets, Franschhoek is best explored on foot. The town’s unspoiled Cape Dutch architecture and stunning natural scenery evoke the Cape’s rich history.
Franschhoek Country House’s Monneaux Restaurant is worth a visit only for the food. Kick back with a full-body massage in the hotel’s private treatment room, then unwind with a beverage in the lounge before supper. You can look forward to a lot, as the restaurant’s distinctive dishes are an imaginative blend of Cape Malay and Mediterranean flavours, perfectly complemented by the wines of the Franschhoek Valley.
Starting your day off well with a sumptuous buffet breakfast while gazing out over the hotel lawns—a beautifully landscaped area with climbing roses, lavender bushes, lemon trees, and manicured herb gardens—is the ideal setting to discover the ideal wine to complement your meal. Within half an hour’s drive of Franschhoek are the wine roads of Paarl and Stellenbosch. While basking in the dappled sunlight beneath towering oaks or exploring caves carved into hillsides, savour light lunches and wine at your leisure. South Africa vineyards are unbelievably easy to visit, with each picturesque estate producing varietals that are well-known around the world and eagerly welcoming guests. The country’s winemaking legacy gracefully combines Old World and New World techniques.
Days 8-10: Track the Big 5 Through Timbavati Reserve | 3 Nights
Drop off your rental car at Cape Town International Airport and get a trip north to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport in Limpopo. The 30-minute drive to Rockfig Safari Lodge in Timbavati Private Game Reserve, which is next to Kruger National Park, will be escorted by a representative.
When it comes to watching the Big 5, you’ve finally arrived at the right place. Upon arrival, you will be greeted by friendly staff who will provide you with a cooling lemonade and a soothing face cloth. Your lodge manager will go over your schedule with you and pair you up with a ranger and a tracker to go on your morning and afternoon game drives. Get yourself into your plush room, freshen up from your travels, and then take a moment to unwind on your veranda while gazing out over the reserve.
Rockfig Lodge is a joy in and of itself, with its immaculate grounds, hard-working employees, welcoming atmosphere, and breathtaking scenery. Your days will be filled with unforgettable experiences: a leopard’s shadow appearing above you in a forest mist, a herd of elephants strutting along a deserted riverbed as you stop for sundowners, and so on.
Day 11: Bid Adieu to the Kruger National Park
Head back to the lodge for one last hearty buffet breakfast after your last early morning wildlife drive, this time bundled up with a hot water bottle and a blanket over your knees. Before your transfer to Hoedspruit Eastgate Airport, say goodbye to the vervet monkeys and warthogs that have entertained you every morning with their antics. From there, you will fly to Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport and continue your 11-Day South Africa Family Safari home.
