Detailed Itinerary: Surf And Turf Mozambique Horseback Riding Safari

Introductory Ride: 2 Hours Riding

Your hosts for the week, Pat or Mandy, will meet you at Vilankulo Airport. From there, you’ll be transferred to the lodge, where you may get settled. Gather with the stable employees and horses in the afternoon. Take a leisurely ride on the beautiful white sand beaches to familiarize yourself with your horse. As you bike, you’ll pass through a range of lush ecosystems, including mangrove shoreline, pure dune bush, expansive beaches, and breathtaking cliff top views.

On your first night in paradise, treat yourself to a seafood meal while gazing out at the ocean and the stars.

The Great Lake Ride – 3 Hours Riding

Horse Riding with Mozambique Horse Safari

After enjoying your first African breakfast, you’ll saddle up and ride inland, following paths that lead you past little towns and huge freshwater lakes. A wide variety of birds, including eagles, herons, harriers, rollers, pelicans, and kingfishers, can be seen in the vicinity. The old country roads beckon you to canter along as you ride through the woods, past small schools and African agriculture, until eventually you reach the Govuro River.

A refreshing drink awaits you as you step into the verdant banks of the river, where a sumptuous picnic lunch awaits you and your horse. There are plenty of open trails for beautiful long canters, so after a leisurely lunch get back on your horse and ride home.

Sit back, relax, and take in the sunset this evening while you wait for the magnificent stars to emerge from the expansive African sky over the bonfire. Savor a delicious Mozambican BBQ for your evening meal.

Benguerra Island Ride – 3 Hours

Your journey to Benguerra Island today will begin bright and early as a dhow will get you from town and transport you through the scenic Bazaruto National Park. While you have a packed breakfast and gaze out at the breathtaking ocean views, keep an eye out for dolphins, turtles, and rays. Island riding is unlike any other, taking in the island’s massive sand dunes, freshwater lakes, seemingly endless white sand beaches, and abundant birds, including flamingos in their millions.

In no time at all, you’ll be saddled with enthusiastic, forward-moving horses. The island’s flora and animals will be the subject of your guide’s commentary. Inland, you’ll find quaint little towns as you follow the paths that lead to majestic golden sand dunes and flamingo-populated lakes. Along sandy roads, the bike continues at a leisurely pace, eventually arriving at a vast beach where fisherman wave goodbye. Get off your horse and waltz bareback into the water as you near the stables.

Sit back, relax, and eat a wonderful seafood lunch as you make your way to Margarita. If the tide is right after lunch, you can go snorkeling along a sheer cliff face, which is widely considered to be among the world’s most spectacular underwater landscapes. Take a stroll down the beach or get some sun if snorkeling isn’t your thing. The sun will set over the ocean, and you will return to Vilankulo for another unforgettable evening of dining al fresco while taking in the stunning scenery.

Fishing Village Ride – 2 Hours Riding. 1.5 Hours Lunch/Village

Have a leisurely breakfast and a swim in the morning before getting on your horse for today’s riding, which starts at 11:30 am. Once you’ve navigated the rocks, the beach stretches out before you, giving you a view of the far mangrove trees and the “Finger Print of God” up a red bank. The Bazaruto Archipelago is visible in the sweeping vistas. Look out for colorful dhows and fisherwomen on the beach as they seek crab from this vantage point. On your way to the Managlise Fishing Village, you’ll make your way along a coastal route through coconut trees.

As you ride past picturesque coconut fields, you’ll eventually arrive at Enrique’s Fishing Village, where the chief will be happy to greet you. The sound of youngsters laughing will greet you, and you will soon be greeted by an abundance of smiles. As a rich treat after a hard ride, freshly gathered coconuts are cracked open and their refreshing juice is enjoyed. This is all while sitting in a basic thatch shelter. Matapa, a typical Mozambican meal prepared with cassava leaves, almonds, and coconut milk, is served with grilled fish from the morning’s catch and fresh crab from the beach as part of the traditional lunch. The kids perform traditional songs and dances after dinner, adding a joyful and energetic touch to the event. When everyone has said their goodbyes, it’s time to saddle up and head home.

Aside from bringing much-appreciated tourism to a remote community, the Fishing Village Ride is wholly genuine, culturally rich, and enjoyable. The villagers, who were formerly terrified of the horses, now have a deeper appreciation for them and are more actively involved in their community as a result.

Beach & Bush Ride – 3 Hours Riding

There are a lot of people that love today’s ride. Before winding its way up and across a little river estuary, the path will lead you along the historic coastal main road that runs along to the shore. While horseback riding through quaint rural towns, kids will often stop to wave. Once you’ve spent a good chunk of time in the saddle, you’ll descend to the shore and be rewarded with breathtaking views of the sea as you follow a bush track through thick forests. Along the route back to the stables, you can enjoy the long, empty, safe sandy beaches and maybe even have a dream-like canter.

Scuba diving, kiteboarding, and deep-sea fishing are all available as extra activities for those who want to stay active.

The day’s escapades can end with sundowners and a delicious meal at a nearby restaurant.

Red Dune Ride, North Beach – 3/4 Hours Riding

After you have breakfast, head to the stables and get on a horseback ride that will take you to the outskirts of town, past the Red Dunes on North Beach and the empty sand beaches. There are plenty of chances to canter around the expansive beaches on this thrilling journey. The red sand dunes of the coast will be your vantage point as you climb them, offering breathtaking views of the turquoise waters and famous white sandbars. Your lunch stop will be at the charming coastal restaurant, where you may feast on a seafood bonanza.

Visit a community arts and crafts center in the afternoon to give back to the area before heading back to the pool or the beach for some relaxation.

Swimming & Canoe Tour

Ocean Walk & Swim with Mozambique Horse Safari

Many people love the ocean walk! Riding bareback along the beach, you can traverse the azure waters until you find a protected area to swim. The next step is to get into deeper water, where the horses will propel you forward while you experience the incredible sensation of weightlessness. Amazingly, the horses appear to take pleasure in it just as much as the riders do. After that, dismount and let the horses run, splash, and play anywhere they like. As they splash around in the warm water, you can truly see their individual personalities.

We will take a vehicle down to the Govuro River in the late afternoon so you can paddle or be paddled along a picturesque canal. Immerse yourself in the verdant riverbank, keep an eye out for native fish, and enjoy the enchanting birdcalls. If you’re lucky, you might see fireflies lighting up the night sky as ducks head back inside for roosting as night falls.

Indulge in a sumptuous dinner in paradise on your last night as you reflect on the week that will surely go down in history.

Day 8 – Farewell Ride & Swim

Embark on your final morning ride after a leisurely breakfast, saying goodbye to the breathtaking coastline of pristine beaches and turquoise waters—an vision that will linger in your memory forever. After you’ve captured every last minute on the saddle, you’ll have time for one last lunch before saying goodbye to Vilankulo paradise and continuing your adventure.
