Luxury Malaria-Free Safaris, Destinations in Africa

Africa is home to some of the most breathtaking natural beauties and best places to see wildlife in the world. Despite popular belief, travelling around the continent is actually quite safe and easy. However, one health concern that could influence your trip decision is malaria.

Many regions of tropical and subtropical Africa are particularly vulnerable to malaria, a disease that can be transmitted to humans by bites from the female Anopheles mosquito, which is most prevalent during and immediately following the rainy seasons.

Fortunately, there is very little chance of malaria in many of our beach and safari vacation spots, and that danger drops even more during the dry seasons. Ideal for African family safaris with children, as well as for travellers (like pregnant women) who would prefer not to deal with the hassle and potential health risks of taking anti-malaria medication, we have found malaria-free safari destinations that offer both traditional big game viewing and relaxing tropical beach vacations.

Tips for Booking a Malaria-Free Safari

1. Choose Malaria-Free Destinations

Many of our planned African vacation destinations are located inside malaria’s transmission zones, which affect a large portion of the continent. Although there is a small chance of getting malaria in areas that are part of the malaria belt, such as the Serengeti, the Masai Mara, Etosha, the Bazaruto Archipelagos of Mozambique and Zanzibar, the Kruger National Park, and Etosha, the risk is even lower during the dry seasons and with the right precautions.

But the danger is still there, and we have found places where malaria is not an issue:

  • Madikwe Private Game Reserve:

Madikwe Private Game Reserve, perched on the Kalahari’s edge, is an ideal spot for families, honeymooners, and romantics looking for a Big 5 safari without the risk of malaria. Madikwe also has some of the best safari lodges in South Africa that don’t have malaria.

  • Pilanesberg National Park:

Elephants, lions, rhinos, cheetahs, and brown hyenas are some of the Big 5 that can be seen on a Pilanesberg safari. Morning and afternoon game drives, spot-lit night drives, and hot air balloon excursions are all great ways to see the national park.

  • Eastern Cape:

Big game reserves in the Eastern Cape are less crowded, and there is an abundance of species to see. Trustworthy Big Five sightings, thrilling game drives, river cruises, strolling safaris, and equestrian game watching are all on the itinerary.

2. Add Barefoot Luxury to Your Malaria-Free Safari Itinerary

You can combine a malaria-free safari in South Africa with a visit to some of the best beaches and islands in Africa. In addition to being malaria-free, the beach vacation spots listed below are also conveniently located near the aforementioned wildlife areas:

As a result of its remarkable diversity, Mauritius is able to provide a wide variety of vacation options for a wide range of visitors, including families, couples, honeymooners, sports fans, and scuba divers.

Luxurious beach vacations in the Seychelles, one of the world’s most exclusive resorts, are perfect for honeymooners and other special occasions when you want to relax in true 5-star style.

No trip to South Africa is complete without a stop in Cape Town. The combination of this city’s famous mountains, verdant parks, expansive vineyards, and Blue Flag beaches makes it one of the most picturesque places on Earth. Before or after your malaria-free safari, spend some time in the lively “Mother City,” seeing its numerous attractions, eating at world-class restaurants, drinking wine by the glass, and shopping at charming boutiques.

With its seemingly endless beaches and breathtaking landscapes, the Garden Route is a popular choice for families. Perfect for a weekend road trip, this attractive route offers a variety of activities, including uncrowded beach vacations, whale watching (June–October), hiking along beautiful paths, and stopping in quaint towns.

3. Consider Travelling in the Dry Season

Although malaria is most common in South Africa during the green season (November–April), over 90% of the country is not on the risk map. No mosquito repellent is necessary in low-risk or no-risk areas throughout the dry season (May through October).

4. Stay at Well-Managed Accommodation

Staying at properties that provide mosquito control measures, such as bed nets, insect screens, and regular insecticide treatments, is still suggested, even in low-risk or no-risk malaria locations in South Africa.

5. Pack Mosquito Protection

We recommend bringing natural mosquito repellents and lightweight long-sleeve shirts to wear at night to keep insects at bay for added peace of mind.

6. Consult a Safari Specialist

The process of organising your trip will be much easier and more efficient if you work with a professional travel agent (The Bespoke African Safari Co.) who is familiar with malaria-free safari destinations. If you work with a seasoned travel agent, they may personalise their recommendations for the best lodges, activities, and places to suit your tastes. Feel more at rest on your journey with their help, as they effectively manage everything from visa arrangements and flight tickets to providing local guidance and round-the-clock support.
