East Africa’s Horn is home to the landlocked country of Ethiopia. When Eritrea declared its independence from Ethiopia in 1992, it also cut off its country’s access to the Red Sea. Somaliland (Somalia) shares borders with Djibouti, Eritrea, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, and Sudan.

The landmass of the country is 1,126,829 km2, making it roughly twice as large as France or Texas. Mount Ras Dashen, at 4,620 meters, is the highest point.

With an expected population of around 114 million by 2020, the country would be Africa’s second most populous after Nigeria. There are over 80 different ethnic groups and nearly as many languages spoken in the country.
