A Detailed 6-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking, Community & Conservation

Day 1-3: Your Journey Begins in Kigali Rwanda | 2 Nights

After your international aircraft lands in picturesque Kigali, a representative will be there to greet you and arrange a comfortable transfer to your first destination, the Serena Hotel. After you check in, have a hearty dinner and get some sleep to get ready for your next trip.

Elegant and contemporary, the Serena Hotel captures the spirit of Rwanda’s past and present. The traditional art and culture of Rwanda harmonises beautifully with the modern comforts and conveniences. This hotel, a Kigali landmark, is perfect for a night or two before you go gorilla trekking, the next exciting part of your trip.

Staying at Serena Hotel gives you the perfect base from which to discover this beautiful city and its many wonders, like the Nyambirambo Women’s Cooperative and the Nyandungu Eco Park. After that, return to the hotel for a day of relaxation at the pool, the Sokoni Café and Bar for a drink, or the health spa for a massage or treatment.

After your final hotel breakfast on day three, you’ll begin the Kigali City Tour. This tour will take you to the Tragic Genocide Memorial, the burial site of over 250,000 victims of the 1994 Rwandan genocide.

After a leisurely lunch in Kigali, your trip comes to a close as you are transferred to Ruhengeri, the place where gorilla trekking is renowned. Along the three-hour journey, you’ll see the picturesque terraced slope that has come to define Rwanda’s countryside. At last, you’ll be at the foot of the Virunga Volcanoes, where you’ll spend the rest of your vacation at Virunga Lodge.

Day 3-5: Gorilla Trekking in Volcanoes National Park | 3 Nights

Indulge in the lap of luxury at Virunga Lodge, where you can gaze out over the surrounding volcanic lakes and the towering peaks of the Virunga Volcanoes. The lodge’s prime position at the base of the Virunga Volcanoes makes it a great jumping off point for gorilla trekking routes.

As you venture into the dense African rainforests on the fourth day of your schedule, searching for the elusive mountain gorillas, you will undoubtedly have the experience of a lifetime. Witnessing these majestic creatures in their own environment for as little as half an hour is an experience that words can’t describe, leading many to call gorilla trekking a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

A gorilla walk requires participants to be physically healthy, mentally stable, and able to endure the wet, muddy conditions typical of a rainforest journey. A trained tracker and guide will lead you on a quest through the forest’s back roads in pursuit of a habituated gorilla family. Returning to the lodge, you will have the opportunity to savour delectable cuisine and unwind in sumptuous yet cosy accommodations.

Day five brings the opportunity to explore the rainforests in search of the endangered Golden Monkey. In contrast to the wild gorilla walk, this trip will put you in close proximity to these playful monkeys without overwhelming them. After that, you’ll have lunch at the lodge and have some free time to relax before visiting the Dian Fossey Gorilla Fund, the oldest and largest organization in the world devoted to protecting gorillas. This tour is optional.

Day 6: Ciao for Now!

Eventually, everything that is good will cease. After your final meal, you’ll have some downtime on the way to Kigali International Airport to catch your flight home.
