The first stop is at the Karnak temple. On your way into the complex, take a stroll down Sphinx Avenue and listen to your guide describe the colossal facade’s construction and its role in the Opet Festival.
The Karnak Temple is the biggest ancient religious site in the world and is thought of as more than simply a temple. It is also an open museum. The sacred Theban triad—God Amun Ra, Goddess Mut, and Khnsu—were the intended recipients of its construction.
King Tut, Hatshepsut, and Ramses II were among the more than 30 pharaohs who helped build it. Massive avenues of sphinxes, colossal columns, pillars, and an obelisk measuring 97 feet in height and weighing 323 tonnes (646,000 pounds) make up Karnak. The temples of Karnak and Luxor are linked by a sphinx avenue that stretches for more than 1.5 miles, and the two sets of temples are flanked by 1500 sphinx sculptures. Every year during the OPET festival, this road was chosen as a route for the honeymoon of God Amun Ra and Goddess Mut.
Make your way to Luxor Temple, which was formerly connected to Karnak’s temples by a Sphinx Avenue that stretched for one mile.
Tragically, King Amenhotep III did not live to see the completion of the Luxor Temple. Later, King Ramses II had his enormous sculptures erected at the temple’s entrance, and the construction was finally finished.

Day 4: Luxor
Take a personalised Egyptologist tour of some of Egypt’s most famous landmarks. You will be taken to the temple of Queen Hatshepsut on your own guided tour.
The ancient Egyptian queen Hatshepsut was unparalleled in all three of these categories: fame, intelligence, and power. She was the New Kingdom ruler of Egypt for twenty years, beginning in the fifteenth century B.C. Many historians rank her among Egypt’s most prosperous pharaohs. Hatshepsut was the half-brother and daughter of King Thutmose II and his wife, Hatshepsut I. It was customary for Hatshepsut to wed her half-brother Thutmose II, whose mother had been a lower-ranking woman, in order to preserve the integrity of the royal lineage. At the age of 30, Hatshepsut became queen after Thutmose II had reigned for fifteen years.
King Thutmose III, Hatshepsut’s stepson, succeeded her husband and shared the kingdom with her after his death. He was regent under Hatshepsut. For reasons that remain a mystery, Hatshepsut thereafter assumed the role of pharaoh. She started commissioning self-portraits in which she wore a male body, a fake beard, and a Scottish kilt and crown. She wasn’t trying to pass herself off as a guy; rather, she was using this to demonstrate her authority in a world where no words or visuals could do it justice.
Hatshepsut’s skill to assemble powerful allies was crucial to her smooth ascension from queen to pharaoh. The stunning temple of Senemut, located on the West Bank of Luxor, was created by her beloved and most trusted advisor, Senemut. Some think he was also her lover, although he was actually one of her slaves when she was queen and eventually rose to prominence alongside her.
You can visit three different tombs in the Valley of the Kings. During the New Kingdom (the 18th–twentieth dynasties of Ancient Egypt), these tombs were built for the rulers, notably King Tut, and the nobility.
Discover the mysteries of King Tut’s tomb and the era in which he lived in the Valley of the Kings.
To this day, King Tut has kept some of his secrets hidden. King Tut’s domain, even as a young monarch, was highly renowned, and it is one of the most extensively memorialised areas in the temples and tombs of Luxor. Just one more thing about King Tut: his dad, King Akhenaten, had a big feud with the Luxor priests when he was alive. The sole monarch to defy the New Kingdom’s supreme deity, Amun Ra, was Akhenaten. After leading a religious revolt against God Amun Ra, Akhenaton—the father of King Tut and the husband of Nefertiti—was expelled from Thebes by the priests and forced to relocate to a new capital.
Tell Al Amaran, about 300 miles north of Luxor, became King Akhenaton’s new residence. Nefertiti, the queen consort of King Akhenaten, accompanied him on his exile, and the couple dwelt there, worshipping Aton, the new deity. Kiya, his second wife, gave birth to King Tut when he was there. His father’s new god Aton inspired the name “Tut Ankh Aton” for him at birth.
After his father, King Akhenaten, passed away, King Tut rechristened himself Tut Ankh Amun, after the name of the Egyptian god Amun Ra. After bringing honour back to Amun Ra in Luxor, he decided to change his name to reflect his newfound relationship with the god. King Tut was just nine years old when he succeeded to the throne as the sole son of King Tut. The monks had a significant impact on political affairs throughout his reign due to his youth as monarch. As an act of devotion to God Amun Ra and an effort to restore the land his father had desecrated, the ancient Egyptian chronicled his homeland. Finally, because it is placed beneath the tomb of King Ramses VI, the only tomb that has not been looted is King Tut’s tomb. The grave thieves didn’t bother to investigate there as they weren’t expecting to find a tomb beneath another tomb. For this reason, King Tut’s tomb remained undiscovered until Carter made the 1922 discovery.
